How to Visit

If you are interested in visiting Monkey Mia to see the wildlife that the region has to offer, the first thing that you need to do is travel to Perth, Western Australia.

From Perth there are a few different ways that you can get up to Shark Bay. If you have a car or are interested in renting one, you can drive. It is about a 9-10 hour drive north from Perth via the North West Coastal Highway-1. You will eventually reach the Overlander Roadhouse, at which point you head west (turn left) for a 1.5 hours and follow the signs to Monkey Mia. (Note, you do not need a 4WD to get to Monkey Mia but if you decide to explore more areas of Shark Bay, such as Peron, there are a limited number of 4WD vehicles available in Denham. There are also 4WD tours offered in Monkey Mia.)

If you don’t have a vehicle then you can take a bus (Integrity Coachlines) or you can fly (Rex Airlines). There are pros and cons to both of these methods. The bus is a long ride but it is less expensive than flying so it depends on your budget and your interests which method of transportation you choose.

The other option is to take a guided tour to Monkey Mia. There are several tours that leave from Perth, some of which are supporters of the Dolphins of Monkey Mia Research Foundation.

When you arrive in Shark Bay you have two options for places to stay. You can stay at the Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, located right in Monkey Mia or you can stay in the town of Denham, about 20 minutes away.

If you have questions, please contact the Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort or another tour agency.
